ExcellentBased on 475 reviewssprulyph2023-08-02Cozy atmosphere, good authentic Finnish cuisine, understandably popular We came here twice on a week-long visit to Helsinki, dined outdoors the first time and lucked out getting a seat inside without a reservation on a second visit. It seems to be one of the more in-demand places to get into in this part of the city, and with good reason. Overall very good to excellent representation of Finnish food, with professional-level service even under crowded conditions. Some dishes are stronger than others: my son ordered the Laskisoosi (pork dish with gravy and mash potatoes and more) and loved it both times, I was impressed too when I tasted it. The reindeer stew with bits of reindeer and mashed potatoes was less of a hit, they acknowledge it's frozen reindeer bits and something about the water in the cooked meat turned the mashed potatoes into something resembling dirty dishwater. That was on the first meal, so we avoided that on the second try. Salmon soup (a staple here in Helsinki) was the finest example of that dish we encountered during our stay here. With the wonderful bread and butter served with it, and a good beer, you couldn't be happier. I think it's obviously a much-loved restaurant, cozy atmosphere inside and even with a crowd, not very loud because of carpeting and the general acoustic setup. It's feels cozy, not overwhelming, and that's something that we as Americans, should treasure, given how rare that is in our country's restaurants.MIC2023-06-01Stumbled on a real Finnish food experience - a definite gem First time in Helsinki and desperate to try the local cuisine, this happened to be the choice after Googling for a couple of hours and deciding we could walk to it easily on a Sunday The experience from the get go was very friendly. As suggested called ahead to book the table and was greeted by a very friendly voice at the other end who promptly spoke in English when she realised I couldn’t speak Finnish We ended up early for our late lunch/early dinner reservation and we were acknowledged immediately and pointed to a table which we later discovered was that frequented by Jorn Donnerin. The atmosphere was very homely, the decor was like being transported back to the 1980’s and was fascinated by the stained glass windows and the beautiful cutlery and classic crockery. The service was very friendly and helpful and definitely a plus to the experience The food was really good but have to say we didn’t have much to compare against…however the salmon soup we tried elsewhere was not as creamy as the one here Can definitely recommend all the dishes that we ate Starters: Salmon soup and pickled herring Mains: braised reindeer and meatballs Dessert: blue berry pie and French toast We were pleasantly stuffed by the end of the meal. Even the rest rooms are quaint but clean Looked like the locals definitely are regulars as we seemed to draw a few questioning looksFrank M2023-02-16Times' standing still Like in every city center it is not easy to find traditional local food but here you'll get it. A place that is well known by locals as well. The interior design of the place hasn't changed for decades, but that is absolutely fine and contributes to the mood. The food we had was fine, prices were a bit high but not exaggerated.PeterP2022-09-19Excellent service The atmosphere and service were excellent, the food is average. Relaxing place for friends to chat, eat and drink wine.PCALGU2022-08-23Delicious reindeer but service too slow I had the reindeer sirloin and it was the best dish i had in Helsinki. However, the cucumber appetizer is ridiculously small... The other main dishes seemed to be good. The staff informed that there was a long queue for the dinner, however is not acceptable to wait 20 minutes just for the bread. The 4 star is only for the reindeer sirloinHanna J2022-08-17Tasty and simple Finnish food We spent the evening in this lovely old school Scandinavian restaurant with a friend from abroad. Our waiter was excellent with customer service and fluent in Finnish and English. Food came on time and tasted very good. The dining hall is quite tightly packed and a tiny bit noisy, but the interior had interesting details if you happen to know Finnish design.SteveMolyneux2022-07-29Good value Finnish food. We wanted to try to experience local food & chose this restaurant based on reviews & price. Some people may be put off by the non-contemporary decor but I don't come to eat the wallpaper. Of the starters, we can highly recommend the Tomato & Basil soup & the Traditional Salmon soup. The mains we enjoyed the most were the Reindeer sirloin, Grilled Chicken with Fig sauce, Salmon with Lobster sauce & the Pike Perch. This latter dish is a few Euros cheaper than on any other menu we saw. We ate there three times & were warmly welcomed so no problem in recommending to others.Skogsmulle20132022-06-20Easy to like A very-easy-to-like restaurant. Old school premises with brown wooden panels on the walls and white tablecloths. The food is traditional, somewhat rustic - and very tasty. We had salmon soup and perch-pike and were not disappointed. The service is good and the price level moderate. This should be a place where mainly the locals gather, but from the languages that were spoken at the tables we concluded that also foreigners like the place. Could be recommended.
